The Art of Champagne Sabrage… adding glamour & excitement
Two hundred years ago, dashing young cavalry officers in the French Army would slice the cork off the Champagne bottle with the sabre, rather than put themselves to the effort of removing the wire basket and easing the cork out. The art of Sabrage is meeting the glass annulus at the top of the bottle below the cork with a firm tap of the sabre’s edge, at the weakest point of the glass seam in the bottle.
There may be no dashing cavalry officers to Sabrage the bottle, but the Confrerie du Sabre d’Or continues the tradition: opening champagne with the sword adds glamour and colour, making the event all the more memorable!
As a Chevalier-Sabreur and Officer of the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, I’d be pleased to conduct a Champagne Sabrage at your wedding, special event or celebration…

Historical Note: The origin of Toasts, Toasting and the Toastmaster!
Back in Medieval times the art and practise of Wine-making was not as professional as it is today therefore, as you might expect, wine did not ‘travel’ well at all! The ‘Toastmaster’ – who most probably would have been the Lord of the Manor’s Steward – amongst his other duties in the Great Hall, would ensure that a piece of spiced Toast was placed in the top of every goblet so that when it sank down through the wine it soaked up all the floating sediment and disagreeable flavours which would have been present when the wine was drawn from the wooden cask.(Note: The wine soaked morsels of toast were usually left as a treat for the Toastmaster at the end of the night!). The first recorded instance of a “toast” to a person is in 1649 – when the spiced toast was taken to a lady – and the Master of Toasts or Toastmaster thereafter took on the role of proposing the toasts.
‘Toastmaster Red’ started in 1894 when noted Toastmaster William Knight Smith, concerned at being mistaken for a butler, was persuaded by his wife to wear a coat in military red, the then Prince of Wales approved of the colour, and from that day forward red has been the livery of today’s traditional Toastmaster.
